Florence was the younger of two children born to Otis More Underwood and Frances A. Northrup Underwood. She was raised an only child, though, as her sister died in infancy before Florence was born. She was raised at Union, New Jersey where her father was a railroad conductor. Florence married to Raymond William Alexander on 16 November 1913 at Manhattan, New York and they made their home at Weehawken, New Jersey. The family relocated to Bergenfield, New Jersey about 1920 where her husband was a fire insurance clerk and later a fire insurance examiner. Florence and Raymond were the parents of three children; Frances Eleanor Alexander, Raymond William Alexander Jr., and Malcolm Underwood Alexander.
