Roy K. Dawson passed away, Monday, March 8, 2021 at the age of 98. Roy was born in Whatley, Alabama on July 22, 1922, the youngest child of John Lemuel (1871-1964)and Mary Benson Dawson (1871-1950).

Roy was predeceased by his wife of 74 years, Elizabeth Ligon Dawson (1921-2016), his parents, five sisters and five brothers.

Roy is survived by his daughter, Jeanne Dawson Jeff (David) of Homewood, Alabama his son John R. Dawson (Debra) of Carmel, Indiana, four grandchildren, Stuart David Jeff (Allison) of Baltimore, Maryland, Rachael Jeff Abercrombie (Keith) of Birmingham, Alabama, Laura Jeff McFee (John) of Montgomery, Alabama and Whitney Dawson Sutton (Paul) of Chicago, Illinois. He is also survived by his six great grandchildren, Morris, Nelly and Betty Jeff and Libby, Grace and Rosemary McFee, his dear nieces Bonnie Burns Murray (Michael) of Mountain Brook, Alabama and Jessica Dawson of Montgomery, Alabama, and nephews John Michael Feagin Murray (Catherine) of Los Angeles, California and Johnny Ray Dawson (Carol) of Jackson, Alabama.

Roy attended Clark County High School and Auburn University where he studied Engineering.

He served his country during World War II in the Pacific Ocean Theater, in the United States Army 89th Battalion. Roy worked for Southern Bell and other Bell companies for 46 years. Much of his time there was spent working on classified air defense contracts and the introduction of the first fiber optics for NASA space programs. Church was very important to Roy.

He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Homewood and a faithful member of the Friendship Sunday School Class. Roy previously served three terms as Chairman of the Board for both West Woodlawn and Woodlawn United Methodist Churches. Roy was a Cub Scout and Boy Scout Leader of Troop 41 in Woodlawn for over ten years and was an adult member of the Order of the Arrow. Throughout his life, Roy led by example and generously gave of his time, talents, gifts and service to his church, his family, friends and anyone who needed a helping hand.

He was a "good and faithful servant" who will be missed dearly, remembered fondly and will live on through the lives he touched. Roy's family would like to thank their dear friends, Jim and Cendy Cooper, who took Roy to church every Sunday and his special longtime caregivers: Latonia Welton, Debra Welton, Rosa Robinson and Clarise Seay. These women became members of our family and treated Roy like he was their own father.

Although we know many who loved Roy would want to join us to celebrate a life well-lived, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we have made the difficult decision to have a family only service. In lieu of flowers, we know Roy would be honored if you would remember him with your gifts to Trinity United Methodist Church, 1400 Oxmoor Road, Homewood, Alabama 35209.
