Nancy Jane Boles was born to Jacob and Rachel Cunningham Boles. Jacob was of Irish extraction, and Rachel probably was as well. Nancy had at least 7 siblings. They lived in Washington County, PA. Jacob was a teacher, and a farmer.

Near their home, worked a young man named Moses Irwin. Moses and Nancy married on 2 March 1852 and had one son, John J. before they moved to the rich farmlands of Carroll Co., Ohio in 1855. There they had three more children: Rachel C., Anna Amanda, and Mary Emma.

Nancy passed away before Moses in 1901. Moses followed her in 1909, after a long illness and suffering with dementia. He was cared for in the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. & Mrs. James Long.

Nancy's obituary in the Carroll Chronicle, Carrollton, Ohio, Friday, November 22, 1901

"The many friends of Mrs. Moses Irwin who have been distressed at her ailments and intense pain will be glad to know she is at rest. Her body passed from life to death Tuesday morning at 6 o'clock. She had been sick with cancer of the womb for nearly three years. In March last her physicians gave up hope and said her death at any time might be expected. During the last few weeks morphine was administered every three hours to allay her pain. Nancy Jane Boles was born in Washington County, Pennsylvania, July 19, 1832. On the 4th of March, 1852, she was married to Moses Irwin, with whom she had lived happily for nearly half a century. Four children have been born to them, John J. Irwin, Mrs. Rachel C. Long, Mrs. Mary E. Barnhouse, all of whom are living and helped care for her in her last illness. She was a member of the M. P. Church at Mt. Pleasant, and on Wednesday her remains were there laid to rest. Funeral exercises were conducted by Rev. C. S. McGrath."

Nancy's obituary in the Carroll Free Press, Carrollton, Ohio, Thursday, November 21, 1901.

"Mrs. Moses Irwin, after a lingering illness and of many months suffering, died at her home in Union Township Tuesday morning of that incurable disease, Cancer. Aged 69 years and 4 months, Mrs. Irwin was an affectionate wife, loving and devoted mother, a kind and sympathizing friend and neighbor. Was a consistent member of the M. P. Church. She leaves to mourn their loss a husband, three daughters and one son. The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon and interment at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Rev. C. S. McGrath, her minister, conducting the ceremonies."
