YORKTOWN — Lewis M. "Lew" Goodwin, 83, well-known businessman, died Oct. 22, 2007, at Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie following an extended illness.
He was born Oct. 29, 1923, in Greenville, Ala., the son of Beda C. and Ruth A. Kuykendahl Goodwin. He graduated from Fort Deposit High School, in Fort Deposit Ala., later graduating from Purdue University with honors, and served with the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He came to the Muncie area with his wife and children in 1963 and was employed with Indiana-Michigan Power Co., now American Electric Power, for more than 38 years prior to his retirement in 1987.
Lew was a registered professional engineer and professional land surveyor most of his life.
He was a member of Yorktown United Methodist Church, a life member of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Kiwanis International, where he served as a past Lt. Governor of Wapahani Division of Kiwanis, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 651, Deer Creek Conservation Club, National Rifle Association, and the Loyal Order of the Moose 1529.
Lew was also a member of Muncie Kiwanis Club, where he served as a past president, American Legion Post 10, Purdue Alumni Association, Purdue Club of Muncie, Izaak Walton League of America, Ducks Unlimited, Indiana Sheriff's Association, Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 231, and a former member of the Muncie and Anderson Chamber of Commerce.
Surviving are his wife of more than 64 years, H. Jean (Holt) Goodwin; two daughters, Dorothea (husband, Rodney) Sears of Wright City, Mo., and Polly (husband, Larry) Branscum of Navarre, Fla.; his son, Lewis P. Goodwin of Chesterfield; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Eleanor (husband, Byron) Thompson and Margaret (husband, Ross) Godwin, all of Greenville, Ala.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his infant daughter, a grandson, a great grandson, and a sister.
Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Mount Pleasant Chapel, 7901 W. Isanogel Road, Yorktown, with Pastor Steve Loft officiating. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory Cemetery, north of Muncie with military rites by the Veterans of Delaware County Honor Guard.
Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and one hour before service Thursday at The Meeks Mortuary, Mount Pleasant Chapel.
