Staff Sgt. Marco A. Silva of Alva, Fla., joined the Army in January 2002 and arrived at Fort Campbell the following June. His awards and decorations include: Army Commendation Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, and Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, and Air Assault Badge. He was born La., but spent most of his life in Florida. He graduated from Homestead Senior High School in 1999 and later moved to Cumberland City, Tenn., with his wife, Shannon, and two children. He died when he came under small arms fire and an improvised explosive device detonated during combat operations at age 27.
