"AT REST
The death of Mr. W. H. N. Magruder, which has been expected for several days, occurred at his home, corner of East Boulevard and Asia streets at 4:45 o'clock yesterday morning.
Dr. Magruder had been in very bad health for some time, but his friends had hoped that the end would be prolonged. As he was very old and his constitution had become underminded was not left to him sufficient vitality to resist the inroads of disease.
Mr. Magruder always took a keen interest in the affairs of the city and State, and in consequence had a large number of faithful and devoted friends. He was a man of culture, was fond of reading and frequently entertained parties of friends at his hospitable home.
He was seized with la grippe several weeks ago and lingered until death relieved him of his pain at the hour stated above. He was within a few months of 85 years of age.
His mind was clear and strong up to a short time before death, and he retained his faculties to the last.
He was a very learned man and thorough teacher, for many years being principal of the Collegiate Institute here.
Though Dr. Magruder was a very old man when death took him, up to a few days ago he performed the duties of Superintendent of the Institute for the Blind, which position he held at the time.
Dr. Magruder was the father of Judge Magruder of the Supreme Court of Illinois, now residing in Chicago; Professor Burris Magruder, of San Antonio, Texas; Mr. William Magruder of Alabama, and Nathaniel Magruder, manager of Poplar Grove plantation, West Baton Rouge.
He had always led the life of a good Christian gentleman, being a member of the Methodist Church here for years.
The funeral will take place this morning at 10 o'clock. Interment in the Magnolia Cemetery"
