Hays -- Freda M. Sanders, 74, Hays, died Tuesday, April 11, 2000, at her home. Mrs. Sanders was born Freda M. Leikam on Jan. 13, 1926, at rural Ellis County.

She owned Ted's Steakhouse and had managed the kitchens of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary.

Survivors include her husband, Elmer of Hays; four sons, James and John, both of Hays, Joseph of Cheasepeake, Va., and Jeff of Denver; two daughters, Judy Laurie of Russell and Janet Pfeifer of Pottsboro, Texas; a brother, Robert Leikam of Durant, Okla.; two sisters, Cecilia Pfannenstiel and Patricia Thomas, both of Hays; 14 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays, the Rev. Michael Scully officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Hays. A Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary service will be at 6:30 p.m. and a parish vigil at 7 p.m. Friday at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 20th and Pine, Hays 67601.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Hays Medical Center. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday and 9 to 9:45 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
