After brushing away the foliage, it appears that concrete poured for a topper covered the dates. The only (partially) visible date looks to be a birth year of 1880; the death date is completely covered.

"ANNIE J. SPENCE

EDEN — Funereal services for Annie Julia White Spence, 91, will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the Flower Hill Methodist Church in Eden.

She died Friday at Deer's Head Center after a long illness. The West-Fooks Funeral Home, which is handling arrangements, did not know the cause of death.

The deceased was the church's oldest member. Her husband, Neal Spence Sr., died in 1970.

Born in Oriole, she was the daughter of the late Julia and William White. She is survived by two daughters, Viola E. Harmon of Fruitland and Pauline White of Palmer Park, MD.; four sons, Shelvie Spence of Staten Island, N.Y., Clifford Spence of Cloister, N.J., Hugh and Neal Spence Jr. of Eden; 22 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren, and 27 great-great-grandchildren.

Friends may call at the West-Fooks Funeral Home Monday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Officiating will be the Rev. Clarence Handy. Burial will be in the church cemetery."
