Orrick "Arrick" Barkley was born likely in Wicomico County, Maryland between the years 1842 - 1850. According to his death certificate*, his parents were Spencer & Esther Barkley. According to the "U.S. Veterans Administration Master Index, 1917-1940," he was born in Northampton, VA on October 22, 1844.

Mr. Barkley was an enslaved person, owned at one point by John Calvin Barkley (b. 1842 — ?). John C. Barkley owned a farm called Brentwood Farm near Allen, Wicomico Co., MD. In 1862, John Barkley sold "the following slaves: Hamilton Barkley, William Barkley, Charlotte Barkley & children George Washington, Rebecca, & Zero, as well as negroes Daniel, Orrick, Lydia & her children William & Julius Caesar, George, & Francis, in addition to 4 mules, 3 horses, 36 'head of cattle,' 19 sheep, 50 hogs, 2 timber & 2 wain carts, furniture, & the vessel 'Commodore Dryden,' all for $2,700." **

Also according to Orrick's death certificate, his occupation was a Civil War Veteran. He appears to have served in the Union Army, a part of the 9th Regiment, US Colored Infantry. Enlisting on November 22, 1863 & mustered in 8 days later on November 30, 1863, he remained a Private until he mustered out of the army on November 26, 1866.
