Betty Lou Jane Smith was born September 3, 1928 at Fargo, ND to Jess and Alice (Schlenz) Smith. She attended her schooling in Fargo.
In 1946 she met Earl Meyer while working at the Cozy Café in Fargo. They married on March 26, 1947 and made their home on the family farm near Binford, ND. In 1961 they moved to Hawley, MN and owned and operated a dairy farm. After a couple years on the dairy farm they moved to Britton where she began working for Buhl's Laundry.
They left Britton when Earl accepted a job in Washington, but later returned to the Britton area in 1970. Earl passed away on December 4, 2009. In April of 2019 she moved into Wheatcrest Hills Healthcare Center.
Betty was an avid bowler and participated in many women and mixed leagues. She enjoyed playing cards, especially whist, and attending her grandchildren's sporting events. Her baking and cooking were truly a craft and she could make delicious meals from scratch. She enjoyed canning and tending to her large garden. Throughout her years on the farm, she took pride in her wifely duties and helping Earl when needed. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church of Britton.
She passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 10, 2021 at Wheatcrest Hills at the age of 92.
Grateful for having shared her life are her children, Linda Sjovall, Langford, SD; Diane Keith, Minneapolis, MN; Kathy (Bill) Meyer, Sarasota, FL; Ronald (Debbie) Meyer, Tucson, AZ; Sharon Stout, Redfield, SD; Sandy (Wayne Schultz) Nelson, Britton; Lori (Roger) Grupe, Lake City, SD; Ricki (Cindy) Meyer, Charleston, SC; and Randi Meyer, Monticello, MN; 15 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Patricia Netland and Donna Johnson; a brother, Paul Smith; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Preceding her in death were her husband; her parents; a granddaughter, Amber LaBatte; a son-in-law, Ivan Sjovall; sisters, Gloria Norum and Joyce DeTienne; and a brother, Wallace Smith.
