Son of Charlotte Newell & James Sweet
Elbert served in the Civil War (Union), 1st Regiment, Wisconsin Volunteer Cavalry, Company C from June 1864 to July 1865. He was injured on the left side of his body during battle and became disabled later in life. His brother was Brevet Brigadier General Benjamin Jeffrey Sweet.
Elbert was a farmer and married Almira "Myra" Burtch on 25 December 1872 in Wisconsin, where all their children were born. About 1910, Myra and the children moved to Florida.
