John was educated in the Laurel School District and worked in the food service industry. Until his illness, John was a dedicated member at the Church of Christian Unity in Laurel, MS. He enjoyed music, singing, and cooking special meals.
His siblings, Carey Helen Byrd Keys, Michael Paul Byrd, and Della Louise Hardaway Pickens, predeceased him in death. In addition to one niece Michelle Hardaway.
Survivors include: one daughter, Stephanie Daniels; granddaughter, Kiyara Bryant; and grandson, Anthony Daniels II, all of Woodbridge, VA; four brothers, Clifford (Diane) Byrd of Hattiesburg, MS, Leonard Byrd of Henderson, NV, Roscoe (Lena) Hardaway of Gary, IN, and Archie Hardaway of Milwaukee, WI; a special brother-in-law, Jerry (Debbie) Keys of Laurel, MS; two nieces raised as sisters, Grindle (Moshon) McCray of Petal, MS and Tamekaa Lewis of Laurel, MS; niece caretakers Monika (Gregg) McGhee of Joppa, MD and Cortney Gates of Oak Grove, MS; a special niece Tajuania Vaughn of Northport, AL; as well as a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
