Thursday, March 11, 2021 - 9:41 am

Sally Ann (Gilson) Miller, 71, formerly of Canton, passed away on March 5, 2021, at her home in Oregon with her family by her side. She was briefly survived by her husband Robert B. Miller Jr.

Sally was born on January 10, 1950, in Potsdam, to Bettie V. (Matthews) and Donald R. Gilson.

Sally graduated from Canton High School in 1968 and attended Canton ATC before eventually moving west to California where she spent a large portion of her career working as a Naval secretary at Mare Island Naval Shipyard, and later transferring to Washington, D.C. for a position at the Pentagon.

She was known for her beautiful smile, quick wit, and elegant penmanship. Sally was appreciated for her attention to detail, especially when planning for travel and visitors, and she took great pride in her typing skills of over 140 wpm.

Following her time in D.C. Sally lived in Arizona with her late husband David G. Richards, where she enjoyed spending time with her son’s family, her nephew Tim (Louann) Mace and family, as well as growing roses and dahlias before moving to the Northwest.

Once in Oregon, Sally continued to play an active role in the Dahlia Society, Power Squadron, and went on to complete her associates degree as a Medical Assistant from Southwestern Oregon Community College, with a certificate in Medical Transcription.

Sally was lovingly welcomed into the Miller family for the last twenty years by Robert’s sons Timothy (Carolyn) of Martinsville, VA; Daniel (Kathy) of Millersville, MD; Andrew (Marcile) of Fremont, CA; and Joseph (Tama) of Stephens City, VA, along with grandchildren and extended family including many from the O’Harra clan.

She is pre-deceased by her parents and three siblings- Beatrice (Mace), Betty Jane (Smith) and Tina (Todd) and many beloved Aunts, Uncles and extended family.

She is survived by her son Gregory Hewlett II of Phoenix, AZ, her daughters Tammy O’Brien (Kenneth) LaMora of Morrisonville, NY, and Tiffeney O’Brien of Boston, MA, and her grandchildren Cyndi, Mark, and Brooke Hewlett, all of Sunrise, AZ; Brody and Maggie LaMora, of Morrisonville, NY, and her grand-dog Chloe O’Brien of Boston, MA.

She is also survived by her 8 remaining siblings Mary Hurd of Schaghticoke; Janet (Leo) Laddison of Hermon; David Gilson of Potsdam; Dean (Cherie) Gilson of Kellogg, ID; Sheila Gilson of St. James, MO; Douglas (Barb) Gilson of Sayre, PA; Jeffrey Gilson Sr. of Canton; and Gary (Christine) Gilson of Liverpool.

The family is grateful for the service and support of Bristol Hospice, Peace Harbor Medical Center, New Horizons and the Florence Volunteer Rescue Squad.

No services are planned at this time. Sally’s ashes will be buried in Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Bristol Hospice (Florence, OR) at www.bristolfoundation.org.
