Obituary of Dorothy V. Maxwell
Long time Yorktown, Indiana resident, Dorothy Maxwell, born Saturday, March 17th, 1917, passed away peacefully at her home in Florida surrounded by family on March 9th, 2021, just days before turning 104 years old. (Picture posted was taken just days before she passed).
Born Dorothy Virginia Drumm in Newark, Ohio, Dorothy married her first husband, Jim Chism and they moved to Muncie, Indiana where their daughter Peggy was born. Dorothy worked at Goodyear for ten years and was later employed by The Flamingo. After marrying her 2nd husband, Norm Maxwell, Dorothy had three babies in her 40's while working full time and caring for her elderly mother. They moved their young family and grandmother to Yorktown where they opened and operated Maxwell's Café for twenty-five years. In her mid-70's, Dorothy "retired" to Florida where she lived with her daughter, Tammy and helped raise her beloved grandson, Tyler.
It should be noted that Dorothy took care of her elderly mother, Florence, until her death at age 92. It is only fitting that in her later years Dorothy would be lovingly taken care of by her own daughter, Tammy and grandson, Tyler.
By all who knew her, it would be said that Dorothy was a classic, ageless beauty. Fiercely independent, fun-loving, compassionate, trust-worthy, and loyal…she LOVED LIFE and appreciated every minute of it. She was deeply loved by her family and will be forever missed.
She is survived by her children and their spouses, Peggy (& Paul) Williams, Tammy, (& Ron) Siloksi, Shelly Maxwell (& Rich Olson), Shane Maxwell; step-son, Steve Maxwell; along with her grandkids, Gary Hartley, Cyndi (& Mike) Girdler, Paula (& Scott) Stansberry, Tyler Siloski, Maxwell & Madison Olson; seven great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Florence & Ernest Drumm; ten siblings; two husbands; a beloved grandson, Mike Hartley; and great-grandson, Jason Smitley.
The family will be hosting a celebration of life at a later date and asked that in lieu of flowers, donations in her name may be sent to the Yorktown Historical Alliance, P.O. Box 356, Yorktown, Indiana 47396.
