Joseph Allan Hurst passed away peacefully Monday after a short illness. He was born in Detroit, Michigan, but has lived in Benicia, CA for the last sixty-two years. Allan joined the Navy at seventeen years old and proudly served his country for four years, during which time he met his wife Nina. He then became a Machinist Apprentice at Mare Island Naval Shipyard. During his career there, he would advance to a Nuclear Inspector, then a General Forman, and finally he was promoted to a Nuclear Director. Due to his hardworking ethics he received many awards for his contributions and achievements. Because he was a dedicated father who loved to be involved in his kids' activities he became a coach for the Benicia Blue Dolphin swim team. Allan also devoted his time to organizations such as the March of Dimes where he was a chairman, he served on the Civil Service Commission of Benicia, and he was a member of the Elks and Knights of Columbus. He used his leisure time developing his talents in painting, wood carving, and gardening. His most beloved past time however, was enjoying the company of his family especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He and his wife also traveled. Allan is survived by his wife, Nina and his children, Ella Marie (Joseph) Kallios, Janean (Steve) Fischer, and Matt Hurst, his six grandchildren, Jana (Kyle) Elizalde, Nick (Rebecca) Kallios, Victoria (Caleb) Worrell, Brittany Hurst, Andrew Fischer, and Karina Fischer and six great grandchildren, Gabrielle, Julianna, Nathan, Gwyneth, Jared and Vincent Elizalde. Visitation will begin at 4 PM Monday, March 2 with Vigil Service at 7 PM Monday, March 2 at Passalacqua Funeral Chapel, 901 West 2nd St., Benicia. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 AM Tuesday, March 3 at St. Dominic's Catholic Church, 475 East I Street, Benicia. Military Honors and Burial will immediately follow at St. Dominic's Cemetery, Benicia.
