Larry G. Wells, went home to be with his lord and savior Jesus Christ on March 7, 2021 at the UK Albert B. Chandler Hospital in Lexington, KY. Born July 28, 1947 in Falmouth, KY, Larry was predeceased by his father, Roscoe Wells. He is survived by his loving wife Estelle Wells of Lexington, KY, sons Brian Wells and Kevin Wells, granddaughter Katelyn Wells, grandson Jacob Wells, mother Geneva Wells, sister Diana Doggett, nieces Darcy (Ross) Tekulve and Katie Anne (William) Lester, sisters in-law Evelyn Mulloy and Emily Perry, brothers in-law William Doggett, Jimmy (Julia) Harper and Tommy (Pat) Harper, and a host of loving in-laws, nieces and nephews, cousins, and longtime friends. Larry grew up in Falmouth, KY on a farm near Morgan, KY. There he experienced both the freedom and confinement of farm life and developed a lifelong interest in agriculture. Long days of sometimes exhausting labor created a desire to develop machines to make things easier. Larry attended Pendleton County High School where he excelled in academics and basketball, graduating in 1965. He was a member of the 1965-66 University of Kentucky freshman basketball team and graduated from the University of Kentucky with a B.S. degree (with honors) in engineering in 1969 and an M.S. degree in engineering in 1971. He received his Ph.D. degree in biological and agricultural engineering from North Carolina State University in 1974. Larry joined the faculty of the University of Kentucky Department of Agricultural Engineering following graduation. He then began a career in teaching and research associated with the design and development of agricultural machinery. Dr. Wells was a full-time professor at UK from 1974-2012 and continued his research as a professor emeritus at UK following his retirement. Childhood days spent in the tobacco fields inspired his work on automated systems and for harvesting and processing Kentucky’s lead crop. Dr. Wells also developed systems and machinery for reclaiming mined land and alleviating soil compensation. In 1987, he was awarded the Sunkist Young Designer of the Year by the America Society of Agricultural Engineers. Throughout his career, Dr. Wells authored over fifty scholarly articles; was named on three U.S. patents, and made numerous presentations of his work in the U.S. and abroad. Larry married his college sweetheart Estelle (Harper) Wells in May 1971. They would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on May 17, 2021. He was a devout Christian and was deeply devoted to his family. Baptized as a young man at Roanoke Christian Church in Falmouth, Kentucky, Larry joined Southland Christian Church in Lexington, KY as a member in 1974 and served as chairman of Elders and the General Board in 1987. Larry was a man of strong and unwavering faith, integrity, regard for his fellowman, and was held in high esteem by everyone who had the good fortune to know him. He served as an officer in the National Guard and Army Reserve and was a dedicated patriot of the United States. Larry loved sports, music, the news, movies, and politics. He was a voracious reader; engaged citizen, skilled handyman, and designer of home and yard projects. Larry had an infectious sense of humor and a kind and generous heart. Larry was a lifelong UK basketball and football fan; a proud Kentuckian, and enjoyed listening to Kentucky Sports Radio. His greatest joys in life were demonstrated through fellowship and service to Christ, his family, and friends. He was a humble leader in both his personal and professional life; tirelessly giving of his affection, wisdom, and time to others with no expectation of acknowledgement or reward. Visitation will be held at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home on 3451 Harrodsburg Road in Lexington, KY on Friday, March 12 from 12:00-2:00pm, followed by a funeral service at 2:00pm. Burial will take place immediately following at The Lexington Cemetery. Services will be officiated by Brewster McLeod and Gordon Walls.
