After serving in the U.S. Air Force, he graduated from Ohio State University and later earned a master's degree from Xavier University. He spent most of his career in bank operations for the Huntington National Bank, where he was part of a team that earned a patent for a Central Check Clearing System. He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Melva (Halliwill) Bowen; and brother, Richard. He is survived by his wife, Vida (Matejic), whom he married at the St. Stevan of Dechani Serbian Orthodox Church on July 16, 1983; their three children, Angie (Matt) Hance, Emmy (Doug) Souders and Thomas; grandchildren, Ethan and Eli Hance, and Samuel, Sophia and Violet Souders; and sisters, Phyllis (Dean) Bailey, Jean Poole, and Barbara Wilkie, and their families.
