Betty Jean Newman “Betty Jo”, 81, longtime resident of Ironton, Ohio, left this world to be in the arms of Jesus. Betty was born on October 4, 1939 to Lola Belle and Harry Carlton Newman in Proctorville, Ohio. Living most of her life in Lawrence County, Betty moved from Ironton, Ohio in 2018 to the Gardens of Paulding assisted living center in Paulding, Ohio to be closer to her loving family. Betty enjoyed a simpler life at the Gardens, playing bingo, pursuing her art, reading books, tending her plants and making memories with many friends. Betty became the “Garden Queen” in 2020, a title she cherished. At age 16, Betty married Norman C. Crouch and had four children with him. While Betty had a baby at home and another on the way, she went back to school, graduated with her class at Windsor High School and was senior class president. During her high school career, she was active in 4-H and on the cheerleading squad. Betty was very proud of finishing school. Betty had eleven grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren whom she loved dearly. Betty is tenderly remembered as an avid gardener, tending to her many roses, perennials and houseplants. She earned the title of Miss Tulip of Ohio 2002 for her hundreds and hundreds of tulips she grew in her yard on S. 4th Street in Ironton. At age 50, Betty went to OU Southern Campus, Ironton, to major in journalism and wrote several publications, Betty was always a homemaker and enjoyed social events in the area. She was surrounded by her devoted family members, Marty, Sandi, Angie and Steve, after fighting a courageous battle with pneumonia. Burial took place at Highland Memorial Gardens in South Point, Ohio with her loving, faithful family members in attendance. Betty’s memories will be always cherished and she will be deeply missed.
