Andrew W. Thompson
December 21, 1957 - March 08, 2021

Andrew “Andy” Thompson, age 63, of Neenah passed away on March 8, 2021. He was born on December 21, 1957 to the late Don and Dorothy Thompson.

Andy grew up in Clintonville, making lifelong friends along the way. He was a three-sport athlete in high school. He cherished playing in front of his family in the 1976 Wisconsin Basketball State Championship game. He loved Wisconsin sports and fondly recalled his years in Milwaukee, watching Don Nelson’s Bucks teams at the Mecca and Bambi’s Bombers at County Stadium.

He attended Marquette University, where he saw Al Maguire’s team win a National Championship in 1977. He graduated in 1980 with a degree in journalism.

His career as a journalist gave great meaning to his life. He spent nearly 40 years working at the Post-Crescent. Whether covering a major trial as a court reporter or organizing stories on local events as the Bureau Chief of the old News-Record, he treated each story with importance. He was proud of the many young journalist he mentored in his role as an editor, and he continued to contribute to the paper until his final days.

He married Laurie Holmes on January 8, 1983, and they shared a fulfilling marriage for 38 years. His pride and joy were his 2 children, Jon (Angel) and Bobby. He was their most ardent supporter. He never missed a baseball game or band concert. He loved spending time with his boys going on walks, talking over coffee or watching episodes of “The Simpsons” and “Mystery Science Theater 3000.” He was endlessly supportive, and the best father anyone could ask for. Later in his life, he was blessed with 2 grandchildren, Ben and Hannah. He treasured his time with them, making the most of every little league game and trip to the custard shop. He particularly loved playing with them and performing the role of “Grandpa Bad Guy.”

He is survived by his wife, children and grandchildren as well as his brothers Don and Bob, and many other wonderful family, friends and colleagues. He was preceded in death by his mother (Dorothy), father (Donald), brother (John) and sister (Kathy).

His family would like to thank the incredible healthcare teams at Froedtert and the Medical College of Wisconsin who provided exemplary care for him over the years.

Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, March 13th at 11:00 AM at Beil-Didier Funeral Home, Clintonville. Rev. Jill Meyer will officiate and burial will follow at Graceland Cemetery, Clintonville. Visitation will be on Saturday from 10:00 AM until time of service at the funeral home.
