U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Cornell University New York, in 1897, from the law department of New York University, in 1898 and was admitted to the bar in 1899. He then did postgraduate work at Balliol College England and at the University of Heidelberg, Germany. Returning to the United States, he engaged in the insurance business and was elected as a Democrat to the Sixty-third Congress, serving (1913-15). An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was chairman of the Iowa State Democratic convention in 1915 and a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1916. During World War I, he served as a Major in the U.S. Army Aviation Corps. After the war, he was a representative for the Curtiss Airplane and Motor Company, until his death in an airplane accident at age 44.
