James is preceded in death by siblings Emmalee Shaw George and Eugene Dick.
He is survived by sister Viola Clark Cleary. He was married to his late life and fishing partner, Ella Imogene Dick, for 51 glorious years. They had three children together, Dedra Michelle Atwell (Glenn), the late David Dick and Baby Boy Dick.
He joined the Navy at the age of 17 and was a certified underwater welder, serving as a Chief Petty Officer for 20 years. He took great pride in his service to the United States and his role in protecting his country. He enjoyed spending time with his family, particularly his grandchildren, Jeremey Dick (Rani), Taylor Dick, Daniel Dick, Brandy Monk, Thomas Atwell, Sarah Reeder (Derek), and Rebecca Atwell. He considered it a great blessing to have five great-grandchildren; Christopher Bass, Justin Bass, Ainsley Dick, Evelyn Reeder, and Isabel Warren.
He loved working in the yard, toying with old cars, and listening to bluegrass music with his close friend, Margie Reynolds. His caregiver, Angela, was caring and attentive in his final months and will be fondly remembered by the family. James, or "Poppa", loved life in general; his joyous smile and warmhearted laugh were frequent and will be eternal in memory. A visitation will be held from 10:00am - 11:00am on Saturday, November 13, 2021, at the chapel of Tyler Memorial Funeral Home with a funeral service to follow at 11:00am.
Arrangements are under the direction of Tyler Memorial Funeral Home.
