John Temple Mayo, 56, of Luther, OK went home to be with his Savior on March 6, 2021. Born on August 30, 1964 in Fort Bragg, NC to John and Paula Jane Mayo. Temple lived a life full of love, joy, and service. He was a devoted husband, a proud father and grandfather, a beloved son and brother, a loyal friend to many, but first and foremost a faithful follower and friend of Jesus Christ.

Temple graduated from La Mesa High School in 1982. He then attended Southern Nazarene University and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice in 1989. During college he joined the ROTC program. Temple was extremely proud of his time serving in the U.S. Army, where he reached the rank of Second Lieutenant. He started his career in law enforcement as Capitol Patrol Officer in Oklahoma City. He then went on to serve as a Police Officer for Bethany Police Department where he elevated to Detective. He excelled on a special assignment working undercover in narcotics. He retired from the Bethany Police Department in 2014.

Temple was a man of many hobbies and talents. He loved to hunt and fish, cook and smoke meats, and garden, but his greatest joy in life was spending time with his family. Temple had a contagious laugh, a smile that could light up a room, and the wingspan to give the best hugs. He was a devoted member of the church and served in many capacities, he especially enjoyed his time building churches on the Work and Witness trips, and serving on the church board. He pursued God fervently in his study of the Bible and his earnest prayers, and he carried the message of the Gospel proudly every day in the way he lived his life.

Temple’s gift to anyone that knew him was his joy. No matter the circumstance, it was clear that he got his joy from a source that never runs out, the Creator of joy. He had undoubtedly caught thousands of fish in his life, but each time he reeled in a new one he celebrated like it was the first one. He had a passion for learning new things, especially things that meant a lot to his children. He savored every hug, every phone call from a loved one, and every new experience. He truly looked at every day like it was a gift, and he had the ability to help others see that each day brings new blessings to be thankful for.

He is survived by his wife, Gayle Mayo; his children and their spouses, Amanda Mayo, Joshua Mayo and his wife Emily, Harrison Mayo, and Ariel Bible Cotto and her husband Xavier; his grandchildren Rhett and Brooks; his parents John and Paula Jane Mayo; his siblings and their families, Tracey Terasas and her husband Tony, and their children Aaron Terasas and Amber Frias, and Troy Mayo and his wife Sheri, and their children Sharayha Whitaker, Sara Mayo, and Jon Cole Mayo, Scott Hutchins, Shelby Perkins, Swaylon Chavira; and many beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews.
