Bobby Glenn “B.G.” Baker, faithful soldier of Christ, was promoted to Glory on Sunday, March 7, 2021.

For more than 50 years, Bobby made his home in Sumter, South Carolina, where he met and married the love of his life, Mary Sue. Together, they built a life of love and ministry around their family and their church.

Born in Gadsden, Alabama, Bobby was the son of the late John Alfred Baker and Nancy Estelle Baker. He was predeceased by his brothers Rabon and Benny Baker, his beloved mother-in-law Christine Sims, and his faithful pet companions, Moses, Hogan, Callie, and Cosmo.
Bobby came to Sumter in 1965 as a young airman stationed at Shaw AFB. After marrying Mary Sue in 1967, the two of them were called to ministry in the Salvation Army, where they devoted their lives to caring for the spiritual and physical needs of others. As a proud member of the Salvation Army Corps (church), Bobby was the church pianist and Adult Sunday School Teacher for more than 50 years. Along the way, he served as Chaplain of the Men’s Fellowship, actively served in the church’s nursing home ministry, served as the church treasurer, and traveled to churches throughout the Carolinas as part of a Men’s Ministry Team. One of his favorite annual events was the Sunday School Christmas party he and Mary Sue hosted at their home for their Sunday School class.

In addition to his church ministry, Bobby served for more than 20 years as a member of the Sumter Fire Department, where he worked as a firefighter, an engineer, and as an officer (Lt. Ret.). He led Bible studies at the Fire Department and was known as the “preacher.” One of his most prized possessions was the Bible his fellow firefighters presented to him as a gift. That same Bible was always the one he studied, taught from, preached from, and carried faithfully to church and other meetings. Bobby was well known around the City of Sumter, where he also worked for the Water Utility Department. Bobby was proud of his military service and was an active member of the American Legion Post 15.

As an accomplished pianist, accordionist, and soloist, Bobby was honored to play for countless weddings, funerals, revivals, and other events in Sumter and throughout North and South Carolina.

Bobby loved the Lord, his family, gardening, history, maps, almanacs, Vitalis hair tonic, writing Christmas cards, and taking back roads. He enjoyed weekly “date day trips” with Mary Sue to the Manning Wal-Mart. He had a genuine affection for his adopted Palmetto State and loved taking his family on “scenic” drives to places of interest that many would overlook. He was kind. He was caring. He was loving. He was both a gentleman and a gentle man.

Bobby’s first daily agenda item was reading obituaries. He always invested in the lives of others, and he was interested in tiny details of the lives remembered. We hope this note gives you a glimpse of the wonderful life B.G. Baker lived.

Bobby’s family is eternally thankful for the heroes and sheroes in scrubs at Faster Care and Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital in Sumter, particularly the nurses and doctors in the telemetry and ICU units, as well as the palliative care team. Thank you for your expert care and for your endless compassion. God bless you!
