Clair Eugene Tromsness of Quapaw, Okla., passed away Monday, April 28, 2008, as the result of a plane crash.
He was a deacon and Bible teacher at Commerce Assembly of God Church in Commerce, Okla. He is remembered as a man of God, mentor, teacher, father, business man and pilot. He was happiest when he was surrounded by his family.
Clair was born to Chester and Gladys (Skjefte) Tromsness of North Dakota on March 8, 1936. He married Florence Mears of St. Paul, Minn., in the First Baptist Church of St. Paul on Aug. 8, 1958, after graduating from Sioux Falls Baptist College, Sioux Falls, S.D., where they met. Clair earned a bachelor of science degree in sociology and in speech with minors in English, Latin and Math.
They then moved to Berkeley, Calif., where they both attended Berkeley Baptist Divinity School. Clair received a bachelor's degree in divinity in 1961 and then became assistant minister at Thousand Oaks Baptist Church in Berkeley, Calif. He received a master of arts in rhetoric from Stanford University in 1964. The family of five soon moved to Miami, Okla., where Clair taught English at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M Junior College from 1964 to 1980. The family spent 1968 to 1969 in Hawaii where Clair studied literary criticism at the University of Hawaii.
Together, Clair and Florence opened the Miami Missionary Tent Company in 1980; they also opened three Christian bookstores in Miami (1972), Stillwater (1976) and Carthage (1981).
Clair is survived by his wife, Florence of the home; one son, David Tromsness of Miami, Okla.; two daughters, Shirley Rucker and husband Mark of Deepwater, Mo., and Elizabeth Mitchell and husband Scott of Springfield, Mo. Grandchildren are Jillane, Marilyn, Macy and wife Jennifer, Cassidy, James and Crystal.
The children and grandchildren of Clair and Florence Tromsness invite you to join them in a memorial services this Saturday, May 3, 2008, at 2 p.m. at the First Assembly of God Church, 1815 East Steve Owens Boulevard, Miami, Okla. Pastor Howie Moss of First Assembly of God Church in Commerce, Okla., will officiate.
