Richard Leo Barrett, 76, of Louisville, Kentucky and Lakewood Ranch, Florida died Wednesday, February 24, 2021 at Lakewood Ranch Medical Center.

He was proceeded in death by his son Michael Raymond Barrett; his grandson Barrett Joseph Bicker; his parents, Robert Leo Barrett and Mary Evelyn Rhodes Barrett; sister Beverly Ann; twin brothers Peter and Paul; sister Judy Marie; and sister Rose Cecelia Hamilton just two days prior to own his death.

Dick spent his career as a restaurant entrepreneur, proudly working, managing, and owning some of the most well-known franchises in the business, including Long John Silvers, Wendy’s, Papa Johns and Tijuana Flats. He was a lifelong devout Catholic and a member of St. Patrick Church in Louisville.

He was a proud member of Alcoholics Anonymous for 37 years, living the 12-step program every day of his life. He tirelessly devoted his retirement years to helping others in need, whether it be the residents at Day Spring, where his daughter has lived for over 20 years, or the clients of Beacon House, an organization that serves people with addictions.

Along with his dear friend and brother-in-law David Harrod, he was fondly known as one of “The Meat Men.” Together, they became well-known locally for their delectable smoked meats and bbq sauce, serving large groups of people for holidays and charitable fundraisers.

He truly loved helping others in need, and used his God-given gifts and culinary expertise to live out his Catholic faith in a real and practical way.

Dick fiercely loved his wife, his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved cooking with his children and grandchildren and was always in search of the perfect golf game.

He is survived by his wife of 38 years Beth Harrod Barrett; children, Todd Barrett (Jane); Madonna Willis (Steve); and Emily Barrett; brothers Robert Noel “Buddy”(Christine); Ronald Joseph (Louise); and James Anthony (Donna); sister Mary Eileen Heffelmire (Ron), and brother-in-law Joseph Patrick (Jake) Hamilton. Grandchildren Hannah Finch (Wesley); Sarah Rose (Fabian); Georgia Barrett; and Madison Bicker. Great-grandchildren Elijah, Genevieve, Scarlett, and Woodford Finch; and Mia and Marley Rose.

Visitation will be from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Thursday, March 11, 2021 at Pearson’s Funeral Home at 149 Breckenridge Ln. following COVID-19 protocols.

A private funeral mass will be held March 12, 2021 at 10:00 am at St. Patrick Church, Louisville, KY for immediate family only, with burial at Calvary Cemetery.
