Steven R. 'Steve' Downey, age 75, Joplin, passed away at 11:58 p.m. Thursday, June 4, 2020 at Freeman West Hospital.
Steve was born October 10, 1944 in Joplin to the late Floyd Elmer Downey and Rosetta Alice Oliphant Downey.
In the early 1970's, Steve began working for Bray Lines Trucking at an entry level position and worked his way up to president of operations. In 1986, he founded SD Transportation, which he operated until his retirement and turned over to his sons.
Steve had numerous friends and loved his family with everything he had. He was a storyteller and always had a new joke, some of which were not appropriate! During his illness, Steve was always looking forward to being able to go catch the 'big catfish'.
During his youth, Steve was a very talented baseball player. Some of his favorite past times were playing golf, playing pool, fishing and playing cards. He was club champion six years in a row, from 2005-2010, at Coves Golf Club, Grand Lake. Steve was a Christian and a former member of the Missouri National Guard. He will be missed by everyone that knew and loved him.
He married Janet 'Anne' Goodknight on August 28, 1966 in Joplin. She survives.
Additional survivors include three sons, Grant Downey and wife, Bronwen, Sand Springs, Oklahoma, Craig Downey, Cleora, Oklahoma, Scott Downey and wife, Krista, Sand Springs, Oklahoma; and six grandchildren, Kyle Downey, Adele Downey, Alexis Downey, Lyndi Downey, Zane Downey and Ezekiel Downey.
In addition to his parents, Steve was preceded in death by a brother, Larry Downey and a sister, Nancy Rowe.
Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary.
