Joseph born on October 14, 1931 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, died on March 6, 2021 in Omaha, NE. surrounded by family. Joseph married Jeanette Louise Nolan on July 26, 1956 in Fort Worth, Texas at St. Andrews Church.
Joseph attended high school at Stowe High School in Pittsburg, Pennsylvia. His family moved to California his senior year, where he graduated from Mt. Carmel High School in Los Angeles, in 1949.
He attended Loyola University in Los Angeles, graduating in 1953.
He was commissioned into the U.S. Air Force Reserve as a 2nd Lt. in 1953 through the ROTC program.
He went on to attend St. Louis University in Missouri graduating with a degree in medicine in 1957, and served an internship at San Joaquin County Hospital in Stockton, California from 1957-1958.
He completed the School of Aviation Medicine at Randolph Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, then served as Flight Surgeon and Director of Out Patient Services at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado. from 1958-1961.
He retired his commission as a Captain to accept a Fellowship in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Later in 1967, he was certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Dr. Scott moved his family to Omaha after accepting a position as a Professor of OBGYN at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. He served in a number of roles including: Vice Chair of the Department of OBGYN from 1966-1974, Assistant Dean for Graduate Education from 1971-1974, and Chairman of the OBGYN Department from 1974-1987. He taught at UNMC for fifty years, ending his career in 2007 as Professor Emeritus.
Dr. Scott held memberships in many medical societies and actively participated as officer in many including: JFACOG District VI, ACOG District VI, Chairman of NE State OBGYN Society from 1967-1969, Secretary of NE State History of Medicine Society from 1967-1973, Treasurer of Omaha OBGYN Society, President of Forceps OBGYN Travel Club, President of Nebraska State OBGYN Society 1976-1977, ACOG District VI Treasure for North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Provinces of Manitoba and Saskatchewan, Chairman and Treasurer of ACOG Advisory Council 1971-1979, Chairman of Central Travel Club 1978-1980, Vice President 1980-1981, and President in 1985-1987. He served as President for Nebraska OBGYN Associates from 1984-1987. Dr. Scott served as Treasurer for the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologist in 1994 and served as a member of that executive board. Joseph Scott was a Fellow with the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the American Fertility Society, The Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics, the Central Association of Obstetrics and Gynecologists, the International College of Surgeons in Obstetrics and Gynecology, a founding member of the North American Society of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology, member of Phi Rho Sigma Medical Fraternity, Sigma XI, and honorary member of St. Louis OBGYN Society.
Dr. Scott served as a member of the Board of Examiners in Medicine and Surgery in Nebraska as Secretary in 1994, Vice-Chair 1995, and Chair in 1996. As well as a member in 2003 of that Board, Dr. Scott wrote and co-authored over seventy research articles contributing to the field of medicine and women's health, trained over ninety residents in the field of obstetrics and gynecology, and served as educational speaker over forty meetings across numerous states. Joseph was commissioned into the Iowa Navy as an Admiral in 1970, and was selected as a member of the Nebraska Navy as an Admiral in 2003 by Governor Mike Johanns. He was the coordinating physician for the Project to construct the Ambulatorium from 1974-1978 at UNMC, and traveled abroad with the Central Travel Club researching the field of medicine and learning various cultures. Dr. Scott served as consultant and had affiliations with: the University of Nebraska Medical College, Archbishop Bergan Mercy Hospital, Bishop Clarkson Memorial Hospital, Nebraska Medical Hospital, and the Veterans Administration Hospital in Omaha. He brought many positive changes to the University of Nebraska Medical Center and in 2008 was honored as a Nebraska Legend.
Joseph was a loving and devoted father. He enjoyed the outdoors, stamp and coin collecting, gardening, the mountains of Colorado, learning about medical history, traveling, art, and photography. He will be greatly missed as a compassionate listener, faithful friend, wise father, grandpa, and great-grandpa.
