Born in Cairo, Alexander, Co., IL she was the fifth daughter born to Ralph Simpson, and Ruby Elizabeth (Smith) Haney. After graduating Notré Dame High School in Cape Girardeau, MO, in 1951 and nursing school (RN) 1958, she served as a transport nurse in the US Air Force based between Pakistan, and Germany for 10 years. She retired a USAF Major in 1969.
