Barbara Y. Hastings, age 71, of Fenton, MO, died at 5:00 p.m. Friday, February 14, 2020 at Sunset Hill Nursing and Rehab in Fenton, MO. Cause of Death was Natural - Respiratory Failure. Barbara was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 1990 and was a 14 year breast cancer survivor. Her remains were buried with full military honors on March 5, 2021, next to a gravesite reserved for her husband.

She was born Barbara May Young on February 11, 1949 in Mansfield, OH, the daughter of the late Ralph Henry Young, Sr. and Iva Mae Zellner. Besides her birth parents, she was preceded in death by her adoptive parents, Walter Samuel Matthes Jr. and Victoire Przybyl Matthes along with a brother, Ralph Henry Young, Jr.

Surviving at the time were her husband James Hastings, whom she married December 1, 1977 in Las Vegas, NV; three children: Corey (Jacqueline) Hastings , Michael (Sara) Hastings and Cynthia (Hughie) Hamilton; seven grandchildren - Olivia (Floyd) Dyer, Tyler Richards, Kristin, Caden, Abigail, Connor and Isaiah Hastings; and two brothers: Brian and Martin Matthes.

Barbara was a May 27, 1968 graduate of Wheelersburg High School, Wheelersburg, OH. In July 1968, she enlisted in the US Navy, seeking training as a nurse. After discharge from the Navy, Barbara enlisted in the US Army (Army Career Group #91, Medical Care and Treatment). In civilian life, Barbara worked as a Nurses Aid in private and hospital settings and in a home for disabled children. Barbara was a Clown College graduate and member of the Christian Clown Connection. She was an Ordained Minister with a heart for the troubled and helpless. Along with her husband, she co-founded a ministry in Atlanta, GA and traveled to Guatemala, fulfilling her childhood desire to be an Evangelist. She was a friend and encourager to all she met, especially in hospital settings while a patient dealing with MS. She is missed on earth, yet healed in heaven as she walks among the angels .

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, she was not interred here until March 5, 2021. Her husband Jim has a gravesite #117 set aside here for veteran married to veteran, side by side spouses with individual headstones.
