He was born October 9, 1927 to James Everett and Rose Grant in Ripley County, Missouri. After graduation from high school Jim joined the Navy at 17 years old during World War II. After completing his tour with the US Navy he attended the University of North Carolina where he met his love of his life. He was then commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant with the US Marine Corps. After serving 20 years in World War II, Korean, and Vietnam he then retired. Jim and his family then moved to Denver in 1969 where he taught science, math, and shop through substitute teaching in the Denver metro area for numerous years.

He loved piloting small planes, mountain climbing, camping, hiking, exercising at the gym, running, and road trips in his VW camper. Jim climbed all the 14,000 foot peaks and state high points in the contiguous United States as well as Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa.
