William was the son of Samuel Simmons Torbert & Nancy Long. He married Marie McArdle on 21 NOV 1875 in Spencer, Clay, Iowa. They were the parents of Nellie (1877), Samuel, & Margaret (1884-1953, Thomas Hanna).

July 2, 1931 - Spencer News Herald - William F. Torbert, pioneer resident of Clay county, died last Friday morning, June 26, 1931, following a stroke which he suffered Wednesday June 4, at his home two miles south of Spencer. He was 84 years of age at the time of his death.

William Torbert, son of S.S. Torbert & Nancy Long Torbert, was born in Dodge county, Wisconsin February 21, 1947 his parents having moved to Dodge county from Lycoming, Pennsylvania, a year before his birth. He was reared at the old homestead in Dodge county & attended local schools.

When he became of age, he entered into the profession of teaching and taught for several years, devoting the summer months to farm work. In 1871, he left Dodge county,
Wisconsin, and came to Iowa, locating in Clay county where he homesteded on section 18, Riverton township. His first home was a sod house which was his home until he erected a frame house for which he hauled lumber from Algona. For 19 years Mr Torbert continued teaching school in the winter months & farming during the summer season.

November 21, 1875 he united in marriage to Maria McArdle, who was born in Pennsylvania but grew to young womanhood in Iowa. To this union were born three children, Nellie, now Mrs. O.M. Peterson of St. Thomas, North Dakota; Maggie, Mrs Thomas Hanna of Riverton township; & Samuel Torbert of Clay county.

Besides his wife and children, Mr. Torbert is survived by a sister, Mrs. Margaret Cook of Waupaca county, Wisconsin, nine grandchildren and other relatives and friends.

His parents, one brother, and two sisters preceded him in death. Mr. Torbert took an active part in local political circles and had held the office of township trustee for more than twenty years, and also served as township reasurer and school treasurer. He was a member of the school board and president of the board for many years. For ten consecutive years, Mr. Torbert filled the office of county assessor. Mr. Torbert was always a kind and loving husband and father and was intensely interested in the activities and welfare of his friends and neighbors. Both he and his wife were members of the Grace Methodist Episcopal church. He was superintendent of the Sunday school in their home township for a number of years, as well as school trustee.
