Samuel Henry Hughes journey of life began in Sparkman, Arkansas on January 29, 1957. He was the 3rd child of Sammy and Juanita Reed Hughes. He accepted Christ at a young age and united with Macedonia Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Wade. Samuel was a 1976 graduate of Sparkman High School where he was a stellar athlete in basketball, track and he was very talented in high pole jumping.
Sammy was in a long sustaining relationship with Jennifer Gray and two daughters were born Romeka and Rashonda. He also raised Randall as his own son. He later married Brenda Chambers and he raised Alex and Carlos as his own. He worked as a logger with Crouch Logging for several years. He encouraged his daughters to be wholesome and complete women and his sons to be gentlemen and providers.
He was known to many as “Boobie” or “Santobey”. Being from the south, he was a true outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, hunting, and just about any outdoor activity. He was the past president of the Hughes Hunting Club. He was a natural green thumb and could grow anything.
His life was rewarding, full, and blessed On Friday, February 26, 2021, he slipped the bonds of this life for a life in eternity. His independent spirit, iron will, and strong character will never be duplicated but leaves an impression on the lives of those he touched and enriched along this life’s journey. Boobie was preceded in death by his parents, Sammy and Juanita Reed Hughes; great-nieces, Amari M. Hughes (1998) and Toni Hughes (2021) and brother-in-law, Michael Evans (2021).
His presence, his memory and love will be forever cherished by his children: Romeka Hughes of Hot Springs, Rashonda Hughes of Arkadelphia, Randall Gray of Little Rock, Alex Gregory of Camden and Carlos (Whitney) Chambers of Camden; five grandchildren; his siblings, Geneva Hunter of Arkadelphia, Lawrence Hughes of Arkadelphia, Jeffery Hughes of Sparkman, Sharon Evans of Little Rock, Shelia Giles (David) of Sparkman and Kassandra Reed (Robert) of Arkadelphia; bonus brother and sister, Linda Hughes of Sparkman and Maurice Jackson of Bearden; aunts, Lottie Wyatt of Kansas City, KS and Dr. Fannie Bell Evan of Denver, CO; great-aunts, Shirley Hughes of Sparkman, and Lisa Russell of Milwaukee, WI; a special sister-in-law, Belinda Hughes of Arkadelphia and a god-daughter, Katalaya Hughes. He also leaves numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, a special friend, David Hall and several other friends.
A walk-through visitation will be held on Friday, March 5, 2021 from 7:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home. We ask that you do not linger; please pay your respects and leave so others may have the chance to enter the funeral home. A celebration of his life will be shared on Saturday, March 6, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at the Arkadelphia REC Center with Rev. J.L. Newburn, eulogist. Interment will be at Harmony Community Cemetery in Sparkman, Arkansas.
