William Cartwright was a professional footballer who played for Gainsborough Trinity, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Swansea City and Gillingham.

Bill began his career at Gainsborough Trinity. He featured in 59 matches and scored four goals between 1906–07, before joining Chelsea just before the 1908-09 season.
A full back who played most of his football in the reserves but did play 46 matches between 1908–12.

In 1913 he signed for Tottenham Hotspur and featured in 19 matches in all competitions for them. After leaving White Hart Lane he played for Swansea City and finally Gillingham.

Later he became trainer at Southend United where he gave the Essex club long and devoted service before being awarded a testimonial.
