Barry Leon Smith was born on February 16, 1950 in Whiteville, North Carolina to the late William “Perk” Smith and Oretha (Andrews) Smith.

From the gentle and playful love he exuded to family, friend, and stranger alike, to the unequivocal hard work he put into anything he set his mind to, Barry lived a beautiful and full life. On February 26, God called on His angel and Barry returned to his heavenly home.

Barry was raised in the Armour community where he graduated from high school. He moved to Plainfield, NJ and began work in the trucking industry for Fedway Associates, Inc. Barry married Cassiar L. Jones from which he was blessed with his first two sons, Byron and Arnel. He was immensely appreciative of his two sons and did not hesitate to let them know how proud he was of the men they became.

Barry met his best friend and love of his life, Deborah Mallory, in 1994, and they married in 1996. In the following years they were blessed with three children: Ciara, William (Alex), and Quinton. During his time in New Jersey, Barry was a member of First Baptist of Lincoln Gardens Church where he was always finding ways to serve his community including his role driving the church van. Many years later, Barry retired from Fedway, and was able to focus on his family, friends, garden and catering business. In 2006 Barry and his family moved back to the state of his birth, North Carolina, where he started his landscaping business.

Known for his kindness, infectious laughter and continuous smile, Barry didn’t know a stranger. He spoke with everyone as though he’d known them his entire life, with love and comfort, and a laugh contagious enough to brighten a room. His unfaltering positive demeanor was a constant motivation for many to persist in the face of adversity, and his selfless acts were appreciated by more than he could have ever known. Barry was family to many, a father figure for some, and known as a friend to all. His open door policy made the Smith family household a home to everyone who stopped by, and the visit was always met with the offer of a plate of Barry’s flavorful, southern cuisine and, of course, a drink.

When Barry wasn’t catering to his friends and family, you could find him in his garden. Full of herbs, vegetables, and a newly blossoming peach tree, Barry put time and effort into everything he put his hands on. Barry’s passion for cultivation was not only evident in his flourishing yard, but also in the relationships he built, supported, and inspired over the years. Barry’s willingness to help any and everyone has never and will never be forgotten, and his spirit lives on in those he loved.

A Celebration of Barry's life will be held at 1:00 PM on Thursday, March 4, 2021 in the Chapel of Bright Funeral Home with Pastor Timothy Johnson officiating. The family will receive friends from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family has established a scholarship fund for Ciara, Alex, and Quinton at the following CashApp account $CiaraAlexQuinton.
