David Wright Howell, 88, of Niskayuna, NY, came to eternal rest on March 2, 2021, surrounded by family.

Born on Long Island in Glen Cove, NY, on November 20, 1932, he was the son of Bert Vincent Howell and Esther Lou Cramer Howell, and brother of Anne Howell Clarke and John Howell.

He attended Huntington High School, the State University of New York Long Island Agricultural and Technical Institute, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY, where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1959.

He was a Professional Engineer and held a number of positions of increasing responsibility in Capital District engineering and design companies before establishing his own engineering company, Integrated Building Systems (IBS), in 1992. IBS was an electrical and mechanical engineering design firm that employed 20 people at its peak during his tenure. They completed countless engineering and design projects throughout New York State, becoming a preeminent authority for lighting, heating and cooling systems at primary, secondary, and university education facilities and campuses. His expertise also included the design of solutions for special purpose buildings such as hockey arenas, indoor pools, and field houses.

He retired from IBS in 2005. He was an active member of the Town Planning Board of Niskayuna, NY.

While attending RPI, he married Diane Wentworth Boyne with whom he was married for 62 years before her passing on December 25, 2017.

Shortly after their marriage, they moved to Niskayuna to raise their family. Their home was well known in the community for its holiday decorations, inside and out, and was featured in the Daily Gazette’s Fall Home section.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Schenectady where he was a Deacon and where his four children and a number of his grandchildren were married.

David was an Eagle Scout, and he was active in basketball and baseball growing up on Long Island, participating on a number of championship high school teams.

After graduating from SUNY, he joined the Navy where he served as a Seabee during the Korean War.

He was a devoted husband and father, coaching a number of Little League, Youth Hockey, and Youth Soccer teams. When his children, grandchildren, or great grandchildren were competing or performing, and he wasn’t coaching, he was always their number one fan. You always knew who he was rooting for.

He dedicated all of his non-working hours to his family, by the pool or on the beach, fishing or skiing, making beautiful antique replica furniture for his home and those of his children and grandchildren, and hosting family gatherings.

He will always be remembered for his endless drive and his tireless commitment to help his children and their families at any time, day or night.

He is survived by his four children, ten grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren: Cynthia Anne Howell Battiste and her husband David Battiste, their sons Matthew with wife Lindsey (née Scheer) and their children Louis and Fiona, Michael with fiancée Joelle Turek, and Scott with wife Kayla (née Brown) and son Archer. Pamela Jean Howell Tentor and her husband R. Martin Tentor, their daughters Katrina Tentor Lallier with husband Matthew and their children Madeline, Elizabeth, and Emma, and Kimberly Tentor Peck with husband Ian and their children Cameron, Cayden, and Colton. Timothy Scott Howell and his wife Andrea Browne Howell, their daughters Rebecca Howell with husband William Butcher, Victoria, and Alexandra. Megan Elizabeth Howell Swenson and her husband Scott Swenson, their daughter Emily and their son Sean.

A private burial service will be performed at Albany Rural Cemetery.
