DR. MARY LOUISE MCBEE
1924-2021

Mary Louise McBee died on March 2, 2021. She was the daughter of John Wallace McBee and Nina Umbarger McBee. Louise grew up in Strawberry Plains, Tennessee. She earned bachelor’s degree from East Tennessee State University, a master’s degree from Columbia University and a Ph.D. degree from Ohio State University.
Dr. McBee began her academic career at East Tennessee State University. In 1963, she moved to Athens, Georgia and became the Dean of Women at the University of Georgia. During her career at UGA, Dr. McBee served in a variety of capacities including Dean of Students and Vice President of Academic Affairs. Upon her retirement in 1988, she climbed to the base camp of Mount Everest. In 1991, Dr. McBee was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives where she served the Athens community and the State of Georgia for 13 years. Upon her retirement as a Representative, Dr. McBee was the Chair of the House Higher Education Committee.
Louise is predeceased by her brother, Fred Keith McBee, and is survived by her brother, John Love McBee. Plans for a post-pandemic celebration of her life will be announced later.
