Cassandra Pickett Durham was the first woman in Georgia to receive a degree as a Doctor of Medicine. On October 18, 1885, while attending her patient, Mrs. Sallie Paine, at Ward's Station (now Shellman), in Randolph County, she died suddenly from an attack of apoplexy and was buried there. Her grave was not marked.
