Mother Barbara Ann Bass was born on April 2, 1940 to (the late) Lucy Mae Gardner and M. Coleman Black in Tyler, Texas. Mother Bass spent the majority of her childhood years growing up in Tyler. She was the oldest of her siblings which were, J.W., Elyus, Ethel and Mesherro (who all preceded her in death). While in Tyler, Mother Bass and her siblings all attended the local schools, including a favorite...Dunbar Middle School.

In 1952, Lucy Mae Gardner moved her family from Tyler, Texas to Tucson, Arizona, where they would settle down and make Arizona their home. Mother Bass enjoyed her childhood and teenage life in Tucson, where she met the love of her life Delbert Bass. After marriage, Mother Bass had seven children, Eric, Delbert-Duane, Lucy, Sharon, Yawatha (preceded her in death), James and Annelia. It was in Tucson, Arizona, that Mother Bass began to fulfill her dreams and desires. She held a long-time position as the Bar Manager for the local Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) South Park Ave Post, where she worked tirelessly as a single mother raising her seven children. She was known as “Hard Working Black Beauty”. After leaving the VFW Post, Mother Bass was hired by an IBM subsidiary known as Unitronics, where she worked on circuit boards and electronic resisters. She was proud of this position because it broadened her educational aspirations. Mother Bass finally garnered her dream job of working in the Healthcare field as a CNA - Private Duty Caregiver, which became her true passion and true life calling working the elderly. She had several clients, to name a few, Mrs. Joe and Mrs. Penn who bragged about her professionalism and compassion in regards to their personal care. Mother Bass always went over and beyond the call of duty for her patients and won several awards and accommodations from Nursing agencies in both Tucson, Arizona and San Diego, California alike. This position would become one of her greatest achievements and the career that she retired from. Because of her compassion and in her words, “I’m always fighting for the underdog”, she gave her life to service in raising four grandchildren, Aaron, Erica, Shannon and Natasha, and eventually a great-granddaughter, Tyasha, which gave her great delight in knowing that she was going to raise her grandchildren in church.

On March 24, 1985, Mother Bass was baptized in Jesus Names and filled with the Holy Ghost at Greater Emmanuel Grace Apostolic Church, Tucson, Arizona, under the leadership of Bishop Arthur L. Pierce and Mother Lorraine Pierce.

Mother Bass moved to San Diego, CA in 2001, where she would join New Ark Church, under the leadership of her son Pastor James Wright. Mother Bass was a great witness for the Lord, she was not ashamed. It didn’t matter where she went or who she met, she always made it a point to share the Gospel truth about our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Mother Bass was a true “cheerleader” for God. While in any service you could hear her exclaiming, “YOU PREACHIN!” or her proudly beating her tambourine to her own tune. Mother Bass believed in order to be truly blessed you must donate to Israel, according to the scripture in Genesis 12:3, “I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee”. She gave a monthly donation to the Nation of Israel for over 16 years.

Seventeen years ago, Mother Bass was diagnosed with Stage 4 Metastatic Breast Cancer. She had a left mastectomy and underwent both Radiation and Chemotherapy. The cancer went in remission after 5 years and then returned spreading to her Thyroid. She went into a second remission and the cancer returned in 2014, spreading to the Peritoneal Lining (of the abdomen) and eventually the bones. Mother Bass was a true survivor and warrior in her battle against cancer. Mother Bass can truly say, according to 2 Timothy 4:7 “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course and I have kept the faith”. In March of 2020, Mother Bass relocated to Indianapolis, Indiana. This was her heart’s desire to spend her remaining time in the greenness of Indiana and to experience the four-season weather. She loved Indiana and being able to sit out on the front porch while drinking her favorite drink, “Pepsi”.

Mother Barbara Ann Bass leaves to mourn six children, her son, Eric Bass (Carmecita) of San Diego, CA., her son, Delbert-Duane (Cynthia) of San Diego, CA., her daughter, Lucy Leslie Lamott of Tucson, AZ., her daughter, Sharon Bass of Indianapolis, IN., her son, James Wright (Sheila) of Beech Grove, IN. and her daughter, Annelia Black of San Diego, CA.; one sister, Mary Black of Tucson, AZ. 51 grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews. cousins and friends.
