Betty was born on December 30, 1929 in Fairbury, Nebraska to Paul Shepherd and Lucy Slater. She attended, among many, District 69, Endicott, and Fairbury schools where she received her diploma in 1947. While in high school, Betty worked for Hesteds’ and Moseman’s up until receiving a job with Lincoln Telephone. She would continue on there for the next ten years, eventually going on to work for Vaughn’s Store, Jeff Memorial Hospital, Lincoln Telephone and the Salty Dog. On May 29, 1955 she married Clay Price Vaughn Jr at Endicott Methodist Church in Endicott, Nebraska and raised two children together, Jed and Margo.
In her youth, Betty was active with the PTA, Elks, and was a part of the bowling league. She loved to dance and could always be seen tapping her feet along to any tune that she enjoyed. Some of her favorite hobbies were gardening, genealogy, reading, crossword puzzles, and especially watching baseball games. During the warmer months Betty loved to take walks around the neighborhood and enjoyed spending time with her family, always ready for a laugh and a cold drink.
Betty was preceded in death by her mother, Lucy Slater; father, Paul Shepherd; brother, Robert Shepherd; and husband, Clay Price Vaughn Jr. She is survived by brothers Enoch (Judy) Shepherd of Beatrice and Timothy (Donna) Shepherd of Wales, Massachusetts; children Jed (Kristin) Vaughn of Fairbury and Margo (Greg) Compton of Steele City; grandchildren Sarah, Adam, Joslyn, Grayson, and Megg; great-grandchildren Ella, Asher, and Bexley, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
