Business Executive, Civil Rights Leader. He was best known for being an influential figure in both the civil rights movement and in American politics. He graduated from DePauw University in Indiana with a B.A. degree and later earned a J.D. degree from Howard University School of Law in 1960. After graduating, he went into private practice in Atlanta and started becoming involved in the civil rights movement. He left his law practice in the early 1960s and went to work for the N.A.A.C.P. He later served as both the executive director of the United Negro College Fund and the president of the National Urban League, where he served from 1971 to 1981. On May 29, 1980, he was shot and seriously wounded in Fort Wayne, Indiana, but recovered from his wounds. During the 1990s, he served as a key advisor to President Bill Clinton, whom he had been friends with for a long time. In January of 2000, he became a senior managing director of Lazard Freres and Co. LLC. He also served on the board of directors of numerous corporations such as American Express, RJR Nabisco, Xerox, and J.C. Penney Corporation. He also remained active in both the American political and economic scenes up until his passing.
