Bernhardt, Merle Winston 4/23/1930 - 2/28/2021 Whitehall Merle Winston Bernhardt, aged 90, completed his earthly journey and went to be with his Lord on Sunday, Feb. 28, 2021. He passed peacefully at home following a short illness. Merle was born in Whitehall MI on April 23, 1930 to Arthur R. Bernhardt and Esther E. Danielson and lived in the Whitehall area his entire life. After graduating from Whitehall High School he served his country in the US Army Air Corps. On Sept. 24, 1955 he married the former Bessie E. Carson. Merle was employed for 42 years at Whitehall Leather Company, until his retirement. Merle was a kind and gentle man who deeply loved his wife, children and grandchildren. He was a lifelong member of St. James Lutheran Church in Montague, MI. He enjoyed following Detroit and University of Michigan sports, spending time with his family and watching old Westerns on TV. Merle was preceded in death by his dear wife of 56 years, three grandsons, Justin Daniels, Jason Moore and Paxton Bernhardt. He is survived by his children, Gloria Bernhardt, Merle (Nancy) Bernhardt, Fred (Roxanne) Bernhardt and Lance (Justina) Bernhardt, 12 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren as well as many beloved nieces and nephews. Services will be held on Monday March 8th with visitation at 10:00 a.m. and funeral at 11:00 a.m. at St. James Lutheran church at 8945 Stebbins St. Montague, MI. Refreshments will be served following service. Memorials can be made to St. James Lutheran Church.
