Leader of the German Communist Party and Berlin anti-Nazi workers. A rival of Adolf Hitler for power in Berlin, Thälmann was arrested soon after the Nazi takeover in 1933, and sent to prison. He was finally executed on August 18, 1944 (some sources say August 28) in the concentration camp at Buchenwald, near Weimar. This memorial was placed on the outer wall of the crematorium building at Buchenwald by the East German government.
