John V. Graves, son of Cyrus E. and Carrie Daws Graves, was born on a farm in Center township, Shelby County, Iowa on Marcy 27, 1884. He died November 18, 1953 after a long illness, at his farm home. His entire life, 69 years, seven months, and 22 days had been spent on the same farm on which he was born.
On January 18, 1906 he was united in marriage to Eva Vernon at McPherson, Kansas. His bride was a former Shelby county girl, reared in Center township.
To this union ten children were born, one of which died at birth. A son, Leonard, died October 4, 1916 of injuries sustained in an accident.
Surviving this union are three sons and five daughters. They are; Ellsworth V. of Harlan; Mrs Clare (Leo) Rankin of Des Moines; Mrs Lillian (Lorie) Crabtree; of Santa Ana, California; Frank V. of Bellingham, Washington; Mrs Evelyn (Ernest) Schnabel of Santa Ana, California; Mrs Bernice (Leonard C.) Larsen of Harlan; and Mrs Virginia (William) Capps of San Ana, California. Also 24 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
After 33 years of marriage, his wife died July 14, 1929. Later he married Eva Fox with whom he lived until his death.
Besides his children and wife, Eva, he is also survived by three sisters, Mrs Will Barkman and Miss Clotilda Graves of Harlan and Mrs Fred Pexton of Des Moines. A brother, Rodney preceded him in death as did his parents. Survivng are many nieces and nephews as well as several cousins.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon, November 23, at the Pauley Home for Funerals. The Rev. Lawrence Beals, pastor of the Harlan Methodist church was in charge. Burial was in the Harlan cemetery.
