Dennis Leroy "Popeye" Edwards, age 73, of Craig Street, passed away Saturday, February 27, 2021 at Caromont Regional Medical Center.
He was born August 1, 1947 in Lincoln County to the late Clyde Morris Edwards Sr. and Carolyn Ava Dellinger Edwards Johnson.
Leroy was a veteran of the United States Navy, having served three tours during the Vietnam Conflict. He was also a member of the Cherryville American Legion Post #100. Leroy was a long-haul truck driver for 37 years. He worked with Carolina Freight Carriers and retired from USF Holland Trucking. Leroy enjoyed playing golf and watching Legion Baseball. He also loved to “tinker” with woodworking and he built many cases for CB radios. He loved animals and will be missed by his cat, Pepe, and his dog, Tia.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his stepson, Jason Karr Beam; and three brothers, Gene, David, and Clyde Edwards.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 37 years, Sandra Heafner Edwards; son, Chad Edwards of London, England; and brother, Tommy Edwards (Cheryl) of Laurens, S.C.
Mr. Edwards will lie in state from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Monday, March 1, 2021 at Carpenter-Porter Funeral and Cremation Services.
A Celebration of Leroy’s Life will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, March 1, 2021 at the funeral home with Rev. Leonard Bumgardner officiating.
His family will receive friends immediately following the service at the funeral home.
Burial will be private.
