William is the firstborn child of Joseph Stallings and Margaret Shefflin. Around the time of William's birth, his parents were converted and baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In the fall of 1843 the family left Lancaster and arrived in Nauvoo, Illinois in December. The family left Nauvoo and traveled to Iowa with the other Saints where they stayed for a time while Joseph tried to earn enough money to make the trip to Utah. They traveled on to Winter Quarters in the winter of 1849 and William's mother died there. With four young children to care for, his father married again.
In the spring of 1850 the family started for Utah and arrived in Salt Lake City October 3, 1850. They settled in Mill Creek and here William grew to young manhood. His father built one of the early shingle mills in Utah and William became a shingle maker.
When he was eighteen years old, William died of a brain malady.
