''Son of late Dr. John Maury., grandson of Mayor Maury''
DC Lists him as single, Congressional, 1866 DC, May 14, 1907
1902 note mentions him being found by a policeman, ''suffering from a nervous affliction'',
Also seems to been married, at least for a time to a Henrietta Brooke in 1896
As per the 1970 census he was son of Thomas, not John, and may have been raised or overseen by John, for a time, and mistakenly named in the above newspaper notice.
It is conceivable too I guess that his mother was 13 - 14 year old Lucy Fontaine Gregory , which could explain the 1905 ''Gregory'' shift from an original 1907 listing by others. A few possibilities for the problematic listing of a troubled grandson of a former DC Mayor.
