Patricia Sue Peters
SEPTEMBER 27, 1943 – JANUARY 25, 2021
Patricia (Pat/Patti) Sue Peters, age 77, passed away on January 25, 2021, at her home in Thornton, Colorado. She was born on September 27, 1943 in Great Bend, Kansas, to Floyd and Carrie Matthews Parsons.
Pat grew up in Great Bend and graduated from Great Bend Senior High School in 1961. After high school she attended Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas, where she received a bachelor’s degree in education. Pat also went on to receive a master’s degree in school administration from the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley in 1978.
During her first semester at K-State, Pat met Robert (Bob) Peters. After dating briefly, and then being engaged for about a year and a half, they tied the knot when they were both juniors. They were happily married for 56 years.
Following her graduation from K-State, Bob and Pat traveled to Denver to visit her cousin, De L and his wife Jane, in February of 1965. That visit prompted a move from Kansas to Colorado, and Pat immediately signed up to be a substitute teacher. Soon she was hired full time as a secondary English/language arts teacher in the Mapleton Public School District where she taught for 34 years. She retired from Skyview High School in May of 2000.
One of the hallmarks of Pat’s life was her dedication to serving others. She was an active member of the Epsilon Sigma Alpha service and leadership sorority for many years. And the decades of work she did with the teachers’ union, including the Central Adams Retired Educators, truly filled her bucket.
Pat thoroughly enjoyed reading, traveling, rooting for both the Denver Broncos and her beloved K-State, and watching movies. The Wizard of Oz, with its connection to Kansas, was one of her favorites; and she relished dressing up like the Wicked Witch of the West (complete with a spot-on cackle) at Halloween. Toy soldiers and nutcrackers were Pat’s very favorite Christmas items, and she had a large collection of both which she enjoyed displaying throughout the year. The next time you see one, please think of her.
Pat was preceded in death by her husband, Bob; parents, Floyd and Carrie Parsons; and brother, Michael Parsons.
Pat is survived by her best friend, Nicole Hanlen; a first-cousin once removed (whom she considered her “niece”), Jennifer Viers (Chris); and other distant relatives.
A memorial service will be scheduled when the pandemic eases and gatherings are permitted. Pat’s cremains will be interred alongside Bob’s at Olinger-Highland Cemetery in Thornton, Colorado.
Pat was deeply passionate about her work in education. She also dearly loved cats, having rescued many throughout her life. If you would like to make a memorial donation in her name, we suggest:
