Imperial Russian Navy Vice Admiral. Born in Velikie Luki, Russia, he graduated from the Naval Cadet Corps in 1892 and served aboard gunboats in the Black Sea Fleet (1892-96). Nepenin commanded destroyers during the Russo Japanese War (1904-05), was promoted Captain in 1911 and served as Chief of Staff of the Fleet of the Baltic Sea. In 1916, he was elevated to vice-admiral of the Imperial Russian Navy and was given command of the Fleet of the Baltic Sea. At the instigation of the President of the Baltic, Vice Admiral Nepenin was killed by a bullet in the back fired by a sailor during the uprising of the crew of the Navy in Helsingfors.
