Mildred "Joy" Hess, age 84, of Crystal River, Florida, received her angel wings at the Haven House for Memory Care in Dunnellon, Florida, on Sunday, Feb. 14, 2021.
She was diagnosed with Covid-19 the week prior. She was born Dec. 15, 1936, in Brooklyn, New York, to the parents of Mildred and Carl Siede.
She attended Sayville High School in Sayville, Long Island, New York. After graduation, she was engaged and, on Oct. 20, 1957, married Gilbert C. Hess of Brooklyn, New York, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Lake Ronkonkoma, Long Island. Gil was in the Air Force stationed at Otis Air Force Base. They lived in Cape Cod, Massachusetts.
Their first child, Debby, was born in Wareham, Massachusetts.
When Gil's time for re-enlistment was up, they decided to move to Florida where her parents and sister lived. They moved to Crystal River for a short time, during which their second daughter, Brenda, was born in Brooksville, Florida.
Joy and Gil moved further south to Pinellas Park where their third child, a son, Gilbert, was born. Joy worked as a cashier while raising her family.
Eight-and-a-half years later in 1968, they decided to move out of the city to raise their family on a big farm in Romeo, Florida. The family would attend St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Romeo (now located in Dunnellon) where she remained a member for the rest of her life.
Joy was a very active volunteer in her church. She served as president of the Altar & Rosary Society for a number of years and helped with numerous church fairs, plays, flea markets, and youth activities. Joy loved people and loved to help anyone in any way she could.
Joy worked at B&W Rexall Drugs, ShopRite, and as an office receptionist at a doctor's office, all while raising three children, a husband and working on the farm.
She enjoyed raising purebred dogs (German Shepherds, Great Danes, and Dobermans), sheep, pigs, chickens, cattle and maintaining a large vegetable garden.
After all of her children married and left home, it was time to move again. They moved closer to her daughters and grandkids in Rainbow Springs. They lived there for several years, until their final move in 2004 back to Crystal River, Florida, to live on the water.
Joy loved to sew and made many items for her family and friends. She made quilts for the women in her family, and when she purchased her embroidery machine, she monogrammed bath towels for the entire family for Christmas. She loved to personalize items.
Family was very important to Joy. She fought her intense fear of flying and flew with Gil to Germany, where her oldest daughter's family was stationed for three years. Joy fought her fear a second time, this time alone, to fly to Washington State. Being a devout Catholic she didn't want to miss her (at the time) only granddaughter's First Holy Communion. Joy loved her family and they loved her.
Joy was preceded in death by her parents, Mildred and Carl Siede, her sister, Myra Thompson, and her brothers Willie, Carl, and Robert Siede.
Joy is survived by her loving husband, Gil Hess, of 63 years of marriage; daughter Debby and son-in-law Johnny Strawn of Dunnellon, Florida; daughter Brenda and son-in-law Tom Boss of Dunnellon; and son, Gilbert Hess, and fiance Laura Smith of Ocala, Florida. Granny Joy has five grandchildren: Tommy Boss (Mary Katherine), Crystal Johns (James), Bill Boss (Marisa), Gil C. Hess and Gracyn Hess.
She has two great-granddaughters and three great-grandsons and another on the way. She is survived by one brother-in-law and three sister-in-laws, nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and cousins. She was blessed with a large extended family.
She was a true "Joy" to all who knew her. She will be greatly missed.
Funeral mass for Joy will be on March 4 at 1 p.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church located at 7525 SW U.S. Highway 41, Dunnellon, FL 34432.
Please follow all Covid-19 guidelines including wearing a mask.
