Betty M. Sowell
GREER -- Betty, 84, a former editor of The Pageland Journal and widow of the late Lewis Sowell of Pageland, died in her sleep on Monday morning, August 23, 2010 at the home of a daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Ken Steketee. Also surviving are a daughter, Sally Hinson of Charlotte, a son, Gary Sowell of Hopkins, SC, two special daughters, Nancy Lyman of Columbia, SC, and Linda Hansen of Pageland, SC, and a sister and brother-in-law, Mary Lou and Harold Eide, of Glasgow, MT. Her beloved grandson, Jason Smith, did not survive her.
A memorial service will be held at a later date at Rosehill Cemetery in Pageland, SC.
Mrs. Sowell spent most of her career in the newspaper business, editing her hometown paper, The Pageland Journal, and as a staffer for The Cheraw Chronicle. She received several SC Press Association awards, and a School Bell award.
She and her husband retired to Surfside Beach, SC and enjoyed ten happy years there. On his death, she moved to Greer, SC to be near family.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in her honor may be made to charities of choice.
